Highway Safety & Technology:
Safely Navigating the Road Ahead
San Diego, California | August 25 - 28
Sunday’s Opening Reception, sponsored by State Farm®, will be held at the San Diego Air & Space Museum. Recognized as one of the country’s premier aerospace museums, it houses a collection of historic aircraft and spacecraft from all over the world.
The museum opened in 1963 with just a handful of exhibits in a renovated building in the city’s famous Balboa Park. As its collection grew, additional space was needed. By the summer of 1965, the museum moved to a larger building nearby.
A devastating fire destroyed this building and most of its contents in 1978, but the city rallied to rebuild. The museum reopened in 1980, moving into Balboa Park’s historic Ford Building, originally built by the Ford Motor Company for the 1935-36 California Pacific International Exposition. In April 1993, the International Aerospace Hall of Fame merged with the museum.
Museum highlights include the Montgolfier brothers’ hot air balloon of 1783 – the first manned vehicle in recorded history to break the bonds of gravity and lift humans above the Earth, as well beautifully restored classic military aircraft and a display of modern jet and space age technology.
