Sixth Edition
Countermeasures That Work: A Highway Safety Countermeasure Guide for State Highway Safety Offices is an annually-updated reference guide to help State Highway Safety Offices (SHSOs) select effective, science-based countermeasures for major highway safety problem areas.
All chapters have been revised and updated in this sixth edition. Information and research studies through May 31, 2010 are included as appropriate. Data reflect NHTSA’s Traffic Safety Facts 2009 annual report. No new chapters have been added to this edition; however, Chapter 1 now includes several countermeasures addressing drugged driving.
This sixth edition was prepared by the University of North Carolina Highway Safety Research Center (HSRC). The original publication was prepared in 2005 by James H. Hedlund, Ph.D., of Highway Safety North, with the assistance of GHSA Executive Director Barbara Harsha.
