STATS Leadership Summit to Launch Law Enforcement Traffic Safety Initiative
Northwestern University Center for Public Safety and the Colorado State Patrol are teaming up to sponsor STATS (Strategic and Practical Approaches to Traffic Safety) Leadership Summit in Denver, September 9-11.
The Summit is being developed in response to a growing interest in learning how to increase traffic enforcement and demonstrate a positive impact on crime, using good data, and without continuous dependence on grant funds. It will kick off a multi-year law enforcement initiative aimed at saving lives on America's roads and creating safer communities by focusing on the following four goals:
- Creating effective enforcement without depending on federal funding
- Using data driven models for allocation of enforcement resources
- Developing a connection between strict and effective traffic enforcement and the reduction of overall criminal activity
- Developing and training a new generation of traffic safety professionals
The Summit is modeled after New York City's COMPSTAT and Ohio State Patrol's LifeStat programs, which both operate under the principle that lower level supervisors are better equipped than executives to appreciate and meet the particular needs of their communities and to direct the officers they manage.
