New Teen Driver Training Administrative Best Practices
NHTSA recently published Novice Teen Driver Education and Training Administrative Standards, a document containing best practice guidelines for improving teen driver training. The standards were developed by a group of driver education specialists and other key stakeholders including GHSA, with support from NHTSA.
Key elements covered are:
- Program administration
- Education and training
- Instructor qualifications
- Parental involvement
- Coordination with driver licensing
These administrative standards are the last in a set of three guidance documents designed to assist states in planning and implementing effective driver education systems. The other two are model education standards and model curriculum.
Together, the three standards provide a framework for state driver education systems, with flexibility for local circumstances. A working group, which includes GHSA, has been established to ensure implementation of these standards.
The new standards are available on NHTSA’s website at http://tinyurl.com/teenadminstandards.
