South Dakota Ride Website

South Dakota Office of Highway Safety

As part of a comprehensive campaign to promote motorcycle safety and education, the South Dakota Office of Highway Safety launched a new motorcycle safety website on April 6, 2012.

In South Dakota, motorcycles make up approximately 5% of the motor vehicles registered in the state, yet represent 13% of the total fatalities and 3% of total accidents that happen on South Dakota roadways. Statistics also show that 79% of the people involved in fatal motorcycle accidents in South Dakota are from other states.

South Dakota is a must-visit destination for motorcycle enthusiasts as well as home to a large, and growing, number of motorcycle riders. The new website provides motorcycle riders, and other motorists, with information on safety, state laws, rider training opportunities, and other topics geared toward making motorcycle travel in South Dakota as safe and rewarding as possible.

While education and safety are the main objectives of SouthDakotaRide.com, the website also engages users with interactive riding maps, information on rider education courses, web-cam views of roadways in many parts of the state, and opportunities for users to share photos and videos of their own rides or take part in live chats with other motorcycle enthusiasts.

“Fill Your Tank. Empty Your Schedule. Few things are better than hitting the highway with nothing but the handlebars in front of you. In South Dakota, our most scenic routes range from open prairie roads to winding pigtail bridges in the Black Hills. Use the interactive motorcycle map to find your favorite motorcycle roads and watch real, bike-cam video of each route. You can even share photos and videos or chat live with other riders as they plot their own tours.” (SouthDakotaRide.com)

The interactive touring map allows a visitors to scout various South Dakota routes, which are rated by degree of difficulty, and view a bike-cam video that shows the selected route just as it would be seen from behind the handlebars of a motorcycle. This can be an invaluable tool for riders who want to view a route prior to riding it.

From 2006-2011, 24% of total motorcycle fatalities occurred in a four-county area in western South Dakota (the Black Hills area). During those same years, 75% of the total motorcycle fatalities occurred during the months of July, August, and September, with the largest percentage of fatalities occurring during August (41%). Of these August fatalities, 90% were non-resident riders.

Every year during August, South Dakota hosts one of the world’s largest motorcycle events – the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally. The SouthDakotaRide.com website not only targets all motorcyclists, but specifically reaches out to those who are traveling to South Dakota for this event.

If you’re planning a South Dakota motorcycle trip, make SouthDakotaRide.com your first stop!
