June 25: NHTSA Campaign and Training Update Webinar for State & Regional LELs
1:00 p.m. ET
Join us for an update from NHTSA representatives on four important efforts currently underway at the agency.
- National Vehicle Theft Prevention Month: July is National Vehicle Theft Prevention Month; NHTSA is supporting the effort by providing materials for use by LELs, local communities, regions and states with content available at www.safercar.gov/theft. This webinar will cover the materials available to state and regional LELs.
- Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over: The enforcement period for the Drive Sober of Get Pulled Over impaired driving crackdown will take place August 15 through September 1, 2014. NHTSA staff will highlight what's new with this year's campaign, and what materials are available.
- Impaired Driving Training: Conducting Standardized Field Sobriety Tests (SFST) is a critical skill in support of impaired driving enforcement. It is also a perishable skill, and law enforcement officers can benefit from periodic refresher training. The Advanced Roadside Impaired Driving Enforcement (ARIDE) course is a follow up to SFST to enhance the law enforcement officer's knowledge of potential drug impairment, and help them more effectively identify drug-impaired drivers and then request assistance from DREs for a full evaluation. This webinar will discuss how to access these trainings.
- Pedestrian Enforcement Guide: Pedestrians represent an increasing percentage of persons killed in traffic crashes around the country. NHTSA recently created a Pedestrian Enforcement Operations Guide that will soon be available to help law enforcement agencies plan their activities. We will be talking about the guide, and how the content was developed with the assistance of a large number of experts from around the country.
Speakers: Kil-Jae Hong, NHTSA Office of Communications and Consumer Information; Leah Walton, NHTSA Impaired Driving Division; Glaceria Mason, NHTSA Office of Communications and Consumer Information; Wil Price, NHTSA Enforcement & Justice Services Division; Dr. Kathy Fiedler, Acclaro Research

2014 National Seat Belt Enforcement Mobilization Webinar for State & Regional LEL
May 1, 2014, 1:00 p.m. ET
Law Enforcement is a KEY player in the annual High Visibility Enforcement (HVE) initiatives. NHTSA needs law enforcement’s help to make the 2014 National Seat Belt Enforcement Mobilization to increase seatbelt use and reduce motor vehicle deaths and serious injuries. This year’s Click It or Ticket mobilization will take place May 19 through June 1, 2014. Statistics show that passenger vehicle occupants are buckling up more during the day, but not enough at night. This mobilization is created to crackdown on violators 24-7, but a strong enforcement effort is urged between the nighttime hours of 6 p.m. and 5:59 a.m. due to the significant number of violators and fatal crashes during this time.
This webinar, featuring NHTSA staff from the Office of Communications, Justice Services, Occupant Protection, and the National Law Enforcement Liaison Program Manager, will review NHTSA’s marketing plans for this year’s mobilization, and share the Products for Enforcement Action Kit (PEAK), designed to help law enforcement rally officers and alert the public to prepare for maximum high-visibility seat belt enforcement, as well as seek input from the LEL network on the products and support materials that work best for their implementation efforts.
Speakers: Wil Price, Highway Safety Specialist, Enforcement and Justice Services Division, NHTSA; Janice Hartwill-Miller, Highway Safety Specialist, Occupant Protection Division, NHTSA; Susan McMeen, Office of Communications and Consumer Information, NHTSA; Bob Stevens, LEL, North Carolina Governors Highway Safety Program; Vernon Betkey, National LEL Program Manager, GHSA
