Across the country, more pedestrians were killed in 2021 than at any time in the past 40 years, according to data from the Governors Highway Safety Association. But the pandemic years aren’t outliers — pedestrian deaths have been rising for more than a decade. Between 2010 and 2020, they rose by 54%. Among cyclists, they rose 50%.
