Waymo Chief Safety Officer Mauricio Peña will discuss Waymo's vision for achieving Safer Vehicles under the Safe System approach and how the Waymo Driver can help address the behavioral safety issues that put vehicle occupants and other road users at risk.

Welcome Luncheon Speaker: William J. Bratton
12:00 p.m. – 1:45 p.m.


William J. Bratton, who spent 46 years in law enforcement and is the only person to lead the police departments of America's two largest cities, will offer his perspective on how to provide equitable, community-based law enforcement. Bratton is the author of the popular 2021 book, "The Profession: A Memoir of Community, Race, and the Arc of Policing in America."

Morning General Session: Pushing Toward a Safe System
8:30 a.m. – 10:00 a.m.


David Strickland, Vice President, Global Regulatory Affairs and Transportation Technology Policy at GM and former NHTSA Administrator; MADD National President Alex Otte; and Insurance Institute for Highway Safety President David Harkey will participate in a panel discussion about the Safe System approach, which has been adopted by the U.S. Department of Transportation in its National Roadway Safety Strategy.

Highway Safety Awards Luncheon

Join us as we honor the 2022 recipients of the James J. Howard Highway Safety Trailblazer Award and the Kathryn J.R. Swanson Public Service Award, GHSA’s two highest honors. Network with old colleagues and new friends while enjoying a delicious lunch. Jeff Walz, Head Coach of the Louisville Cardinals women's basketball team, will share what it takes to develop a championship mindset.

Distracted driving remains a major crash contributor and yet significantly underreported. National experts will discuss the distracted driving challenge and best practices on addressing it.

With 45% of highway fatalities occurring on rural roads, national experts will discuss key challenges and opportunities to advance highway safety in less populated areas.

Closing Luncheon: A Conversation with Jane Pauley

Jane Pauley, one of the world’s most respected journalists and host of CBS Sunday Morning, will discuss her distinguished career, her personal experience and advocacy on mental health and how to reinvent yourself late in your career.
