Missouri and Virginia are the most recent states grappling with a spike in motor vehicle fatalities related to speed and lack of seat belt use, even though overall traffic volumes declined sharply due to COVID-19 stay-at-home orders.
The transportation community is concerned that while overall road deaths dropped from 2009 through 2018, pedestrian deaths rose by 53% to 6,283 in 2018.
