The Associate Administrator for Research and Program Development is responsible for the development of behavioral safety programs of the Administration including applied research, program conception and design, demonstration, evaluation, technical assistance and national leadership to guide organizations, states and local communities as they plan, develop, implement, and evaluate traffic safety programs to reduce traffic crashes and their resulting deaths, injuries and property damage/economic costs.
- Leads a team of more than 60 people with diverse professional experience in highway safety, behavioral and public health sciences, research, public safety and law enforcement. Determines organizational, human resources and budgetary parameters necessary to support the office.
- Plans and directs the development and dissemination of research and of traffic and vehicle safety programs related to impaired driving; occupant protection; traffic law enforcement; pedestrian, bicycle, and motorcycle safety; emergency medical services; behavioral research, as well as other special programs that may be assigned.
- Partners with a variety of internal and external stakeholders including researchers and academics, emergency response professionals, safety advocates, international, federal, state and local officials to develop and implement traffic safety programs, and leads collaborative planning activities with public and private sector stakeholders.
- Oversees a program that monitors and evaluates activities of the NHTSA regional offices, in collaboration with the offices for Regional Operations and Program Delivery and Communications and Consumer Information, to ensure that the agency is optimizing its effectiveness in supporting states and local communities in planning, developing, and implementing comprehensive traffic injury prevention and control programs.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
- PROBATIONARY PERIOD: Complete a one-year SES probationary period (unless already completed).

- DRUG TEST: This position is subject to a pre-employment drug test and random drug testing during employment.
