Do you have experience with Highway Safety initiatives? Are you interested in driving DMV’s safety efforts to align and achieve the Commonwealth’s vision of “Towards Zero Deaths and Serious Injuries from motor vehicle crashes so that all road users arrive safely at their destination”? If so, the Department of Motor Vehicles is seeking someone like you to champion the Department of Motor Vehicle’s Highway Safety Strategy.

As the Director of Highway Safety Strategy for the DMV, you will develop and execute a data-driven Highway Safety Strategy in partnership with other state and federal agencies and associations, collect and analyze data, and ensure that internal strategies meet Commonwealth goals.

To oversee the safety strategy, you will have an in-depth knowledge of highway safety and the ability to develop an actionable and executable strategy. In addition to understanding strategic levers, you’ll need the ability to champion complex projects with multiple internal parties and manage and interpret data.

Serving as the Highway Safety Strategy Director means that you will not only know safety strategy but will have facilitated a thorough understanding of safety needs achieved through data collection and analytics and an ability to create and execute strategy to help achieve DMV’s mission and vision, and ultimately, the Commonwealth’s mission and vision for safer roadways.


  • DMV’s strategy to support the Strategic Plan around the emphasis areas of safe road users, safe vehicles, and data supporting safe roads, safe speeds, and post-crash care. Particular focus areas include impaired driving, speeding, occupant protection, roadway departure, intersections, young drivers, bicyclists, pedestrians, aging road users, motorcyclists, and heavy vehicles.
  • Generate and report on proprietary analytics and insights related to highway safety in the DMV pertinent Safe System Emphasis areas, including pedestrians and bicyclists, impaired drivers, motorcyclists, and young drivers. This includes maintenance and accuracy of TREDS data.
    Supporting the Virginia Strategic Highway Safety Plan as the owner of highway data and be ready to provide data upon request.
  • Securing additional grant funding from federal, public, and private grants. While compliance to received grants falls with Finance, this position ensures operational compliance with their terms.
