Traffic deaths are continuing a modest decline, but we have much more work remaining to make our roads safer for people both inside and outside a motor vehicle.
GHSA's data analysis, Pedestrian Traffic Fatalities by State: 2023 Preliminary Data (January-June), projects that drivers struck and killed 3,373 people walking in the first half of 2023 – down 4% from the year before but 14% above 2019, the last pre-pandemic year.
The United States is at a critical juncture in traffic safety. Roadway deaths are finally beginning to fall following the pandemic-induced surge. While this is welcome news, we as a nation can’t sit back and expect the numbers to improve on their own. Dangerous driving behaviors – like speeding, impaired driving and not buckling up – continue to kill people on U.S. roads every day.

Drunk driving is one of the deadliest yet most preventable behaviors that accounts for nearly one-third of the nation’s traffic crash fatalities.
GHSA's annual spotlight report, Pedestrian Traffic Fatalities by State: 2022 Preliminary Data, offers a comprehensive look at state and national trends in pedestrian deaths in 2022. The report projects that drivers struck and killed at least 7,508 people walking in 2022 – the highest number since 1981 and an average of 20 deaths every day.
