Framework for Assessing Potential Safety Impacts of Automated Driving Systems (BTS-07)

ADAS
October 3, 2022

The publication presents a framework and strategic approach for the safety profession to consider in developing and implementing new design criteria and operational approaches that consider these technological advances.

Project Overview

Status: Completed (published as NCHRP Research Report 1001/BTSCRP Research Report 2 in October 2022)

This research project reviewed and documented existing and anticipated future changes to the vehicle fleet. With this information, researchers developed an outline of how these changes will likely affect safety performance over time and what potential changes to design and operational criteria could be developed to maximize the potential benefits.

The research was used to develop a framework and strategic approach for the safety profession to consider in developing and implementing new design criteria and operational approaches that consider these technological advances.
