Each year, in conjunction with its Annual Meeting, GHSA recognizes various organizations and individuals that demonstrate exceptional leadership, innovation and impact in traffic safety with Roadway Safety Awards.

Now Accepting Nominations for 2026 Awards!

Nominations for GHSA's 2026 Roadway Safety Awards are due by Friday, March 27. The awards bill be presented at the GHSA 2026 Annual Meeting in Minneapolis.

James J. Howard Highway Safety Trailblazer Award

  • Recognizes an individual whose sustained, visionary leadership has significantly advanced roadway safety.

Kathryn J.R. Swanson Public Service Award

  • Honors an individual who has made notable contributions to the management or implementation of roadway safety programs or policies, or who has provided outstanding service to GHSA, federal safety agencies or national highway safety organizations.

Peter K. O’Rourke Special Achievement Awards

  • Celebrates outstanding achievements in roadway safety by individuals, coalitions, organizations, nonprofit groups, media outlets, government agencies or academic institutions.

Innovative Partnership in Roadway Safety Award

  • Recognizes businesses that demonstrate leadership and creativity in advancing roadway safety. Eligible activities include grant programs, awareness campaigns, research projects, toolkits, publications and more.
