In 2024, the Governors Highway Safety Association (GHSA) partnered with the Foundation for Advancing Alcohol Responsibility (Responsibility.org) to provide a $28,750 grant to the Idaho Office of Highway Safety to strengthen the North Idaho DUI Task Force’s capacity to address impaired driving.
The grant strengthened the North Idaho DUI Task Force’s ability to respond to impaired driving by investing in officer training, professional development and partnerships with law enforcement and community groups. Activities included standardized field sobriety and ARIDE training, the launch of North Idaho’s first phlebotomy course, expansion of the Officer Recognition Program and outreach events designed to build community trust and promote safer driving choices.
Between May 2024 and July 2025, the project delivered training to officers across state, county and tribal agencies, culminating in the certification of 16 officers in phlebotomy for timely blood evidence collection. A recognition event in May 2025 honored 31 officers for DUI enforcement milestones, while community engagement efforts ranged from parade participation to educational booths and ride-share partnerships during high-risk holidays.
The project left a measurable impact on impaired driving enforcement in North Idaho. More officers are now trained and certified, blood evidence collection capacity has improved and partnerships with community groups and agencies have strengthened. By combining training, recognition and outreach, the North Idaho DUI Task Force is better positioned to reduce impaired driving and create safer roads across the region.
