Youth and Drowsy Driving: A Social Media Toolkit for SHSOs

Drowsy Driving Youthcast Media Group
February 26, 2026

GHSA, with support from General Motors, provided a grant to Youthcast Media Group to train youth to source materials and produce videos on the issue of drowsy driving.

Background

Youthcast Media Group (YMG) works with high school students in under-resourced communities to help them produce multimedia journalism that highlights solutions to health and safety disparities where they live.

Through the support of General Motors (GM), GHSA provided a grant to YMG to train youth to message to their peers about the dangers of drowsy driving. Research shows that peers are more receptive to behavior change messages that come from their peers. GHSA connected YMG students with subject matter experts who helped them learn about the issue and provided content for their messages.

YMG youth used this knowledge to develop the following drowsy driving awareness social media images and videos for use by State Highway Safety Offices (SHSO) and their partners. These posts provide a youth perspective on this important safety issue and can help your SHSO reach young people on social media in an engaging way. These posts were created by youth, for youth.

How to Use This Toolkit

This toolkit provides video content and images that SHSOs and their partners may disseminate via social media. It includes instructions on how to download both the image and video files and suggested text to accompany each video post. Users are encouraged to share these posts where they will have the biggest impact in your state. In addition to IG, these messages can be shared on Facebook, X, Threads, YouTube, TikTok and other platforms. Tagging your local partners, where applicable, can help amplify the message.

Download Instructions: Click on the OPEN button to open the file in Google Drive. Then select File > Download. All files are in .mp4 format.

Highway Hypnosis

Young woman with text Have you ever heard of highway hypnosis?

Suggested Caption: The road really CAN almost lull you into a hypnotic state. Now this should snap you to attention: It’s far more likely to happen when you’re tired. Watch to learn more about highway hypnosis.

Drowsy Driving Could Happen to Anyone

Young woman facing camera

Suggested Caption: Marian Berkowitz lost her brother in a drowsy driving crash that happened after a clock change. This #drowsydrivingpreventionweek follows a clock change too. So this week and all year long - make sure you don’t put your own or other people’s lives on the line by driving while you’re too tired to do so safely.

Drunk v. Drowsy Driving

Young man facing the camera

Suggested Caption: Few of us would ever drive drunk, but more than half of people admit to driving while tired. (The percentage of people who actually DO is probably far higher too!) Get this, though: Drive after being awake for 18 hours and you’re getting close to the legal limit for intoxication!

Delayed School Start Times

Suggested Caption: Who among us doesn’t appreciate getting an extra hour of shut-eye? When Fairfax County gave its students another 60 minutes to get to school, it was far more than appreciated. It led to a big drop in teen crashes! Being well-rested is simply safer. Don’t. Drive. Drowsy.

Despite New Technology, Drowsy Driving is Still Dangerous

Text reading It could happen to anyone, even in this day and age with all the bells and whistles that vehicles have - cell phones, everything - it's still a danger.

Suggested Caption: Many of the newest cars have features that urge you to take a break, apply the brakes in an emergency and alert you if someone is in your blind spot. And cell phones have features that can shut off notifications and let others know you’re driving. Despite these newer safety features, drowsy driving is still injuring and killing people today, decades after it claimed the life of Marian Berkowitz’s brother.
