U.S. Pedestrian Deaths Spike 12% in 2021, Soaring to a 40-Year High, Projections Show

On Thursday, the Governors Highway Safety Association (GHSA) released its annual Pedestrian Traffic Fatalities by State: 2021 Preliminary Data, showing that an estimated 7,485 pedestrians were struck and killed by motor vehicles in 2021, a 12% increase from the 6,711 in 2020, marking the highest single year total in 40 years.
